Amsterdam’s history

Amsterdam is a hamlet in the Rural Municipality of Buchanan No. 304, about 64 kilometres north of Yorkton and 1.5 kilometres west of Highway 9. It was founded at the turn of the 20th century by Dutch immigrants, and that is where the name comes from.

In its prime the community had a post office, a grain elevator, a garage and a school. Like many small towns, it has felt the effects of the gradual move toward urban life, and those services are no longer part of the hamlet. Today only a small number of people live there, most of them of Ukrainian descent.
